Hi Stephen,
I’m not surprised at all. You are a natural leader who respects the talents of those around you. Your warmth, intellect, humor, and grace are the reasons your staff and students work so hard to achieve common goals.
My short stay with you was enough time to see why you are loved by those you serve. I wish you and Timberland all the best for continued success.
Take care,
Irwin

That goes both ways Stephen. I appreciate those kind words and getting to work and learn with educational leaders like you makes me wonder why they pay me to do this. Please know that even though the program is coming to an end, the relationship need not end. I hope our paths cross again, and please let me know if there’s something I can help you with in the future.

Subject: Timberland / Charter Renewal / Community Relationships
Friends,
In preparation for the renewal application being prepared for submission to GVSU, there is a question about the relationship and outreach of Timberland with the Muskegon community.
Principal Evans and the admin team compiled the attached list, which, to remark the obvious, is amazing. A great statement about the culture of the school – and the reality of engaging resources that can support the education/formation efforts for the Timberland students!
Congrats and thanks to Principal Evans and his admin team!!!

Mr. Evans, I have no idea where to start. Since you have been at Timberland you have put out so many fires out, one of our main fires was a very challenging parent with a special needs student who has been with Timberland since the 2nd grade. We went from everyone running away from tough situations to Mr. Evans who waits and has the patience to sit and have an open conversation with any and everyone. This former challenging parent has not only transformed her mindset about our school but now makes sure she lets us all know how much she loves and appreciates everyone.
We are truly blessed to have you walk through our doors everyday.

Blessings to you Stephen. I am appreciative of your support. I learned from you as well. I am growing in understanding how my “white” identity influences my perspective. As we both agree, Jesus Christ demonstrated perfect equity for us, yet our socially constructed race issues in our country is very harmful to the “love” Jesus instructed us to live out in our lives. You have given me greater insight and I appreciate this tremendously.
Be well, I have taken the liberty of including you on my prayer list. I am thankful I have new brother in Christ!

Stephen,
I wanted to reach out to you as I have noticed and have a hunch you are a fellow believer. To that end, I want you to know that as your brother in Christ I stand ready to assist you in this course, with your work and family. God didn’t put me in this position to stand by and watch the oppression and inequity continue to exist day after day, month after month and year after year.
Thank you for the work you are doing at your school and if you see a way I can leverage the system to bring resources and support for the work you are doing, please let me know.
In Christ,
Rick

Mr. Evans, I can be more specific with anything just let me know. Once again thanks for the strong recommendation. I had a great year at LRHS, highly effective, and I have already accepted another job with Manatee County. I do have an interview with Sarasota County as well, they just seem a little uptight.

About the Author
Stephen Evans: A Good Man to Ride the River With
I met Mr. Stephen Evans in July 2012 when applying for a position as a social studies instructor in Sarasota, since that time he has helped me progress both professionally and personally. I had the pleasure of working for Mr. Evans for seven years, and today I am proud to call him my friend.
Mr. Evans is a man of great faith and great compassion toward his fellow man, and these attributes were at the basis of his vision of education. Stephen Evans is a man who inspires others, students and their families and his co workers in education. I am a better person for knowing Mr. Evans, and he has affected my life in a positive way. I am hoping someday down the line I can return the many favors he has done for me, but in the meantime, I can not thank him enough. Stephen Evans is a leader, and to steal line from Johnny Cash, he is a good man to ride the river with.
THE PEOPLE
We had a pretty good group of people at SSIS Middle School, and I remember most all of them fondly. I feel we had a great run at the middle school, and we helped a lot of kids and their families that may not have gotten the attention in a larger district school. We wanted the kids to know that we were all there to help with their struggles whether academic or other.
When you like the people with whom you work, you enjoy going to work, as was the case at SSIS. Most everyone participated in the extracurriculars, the dances, festivals and sporting events. It was a team effort, and I do miss some of my former team members. I understand that after I left most of the other older employees who were there soon left or were let go. Hopefully we can get together again sometime.
I remember Mr. Patton helping me put those dances together in the days before Kevin Alvey got there. Mr. Patton had that calm nature about him and was always ready to help you out with any matters both personal and professional. Mike Floyd! I know it may not look like it, but I am convinced that Floyd and I are related somewhere down the line. We liked the same music, food and we talked about cooking. Also, Mike made some terrific lunches and breakfasts for the faculty. Some terrific people at SSIS Middle.
TEAM BUILDING
I remember the team building experiences that you organized, which attributed to the closeness of the faculty. The bowling, the pizza and beer and of course the end of year dinners all helped the staff bond and made us stronger professionally. I remember having a lot of fun with my coworkers at these functions as well as yourself. Sharing food and drink in most cultures is an act of friendship and trust. We had fun at these, especially the end of the year ones.
I recall the one year where Berry stole the show at Prestancia and all the elementary staff telling him to quiet down. I still think about that and laugh. I also remember the last couple times in St. Armond Circle around the piano bar, fun times for everyone. I always enjoyed meeting the families and significant others of my colleagues. These events that you organized truly did help us build a stronger team and are some of my fondest memories of my co-workers.
THE STUDENTS
We had a diverse student population at SSIS both ethnically and academically. I recall certain students, and the talents they possessed, both positive and negative. Keeping middle school students focused can be a daunting task, but never a mundane one. For the most part, I had a great experience with my students. Teaching at SSIS made me a more creative instructor.
Some of our students who were identified as some of our neediest, I felt were also our most creative. I know that from an administrative view both yourself and Mr. Patton worked with our students and their parents with great patience and understanding. I could not have kept my composure dealing with unruly parents the way you were able to. My father was a school administrator for thirty-five years, and I understand what a difficult task it can be.
Our students enjoyed many field trips from the University of Florida to Orlando to many local destinations to the eighth-grade trips to major cities. Some of these students had never been out of Florida. What a great reward for these kids.
Mr. Evans this is just kind of an overview of some basic things I remembered. I can write more and be more specific with students or faculty. Use these recollections at will. If you have specific questions for me, I can answer them in kind of the same fashion or a different format. Anything I can do to help let me know.

Mr. Evans,
My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Evans for ten years! We worked at a Title I Charter School in Sarasota County where my husband was the Dean of Students and I was a classroom teacher among other things. Mr. Evans was always a positive influence on both our staff and our students. He had a huge heart for the children that attended our school. Coming to work every day was a pleasure while he was our administrator as he always greeted us with a hug and a smile. My husband and I knew Mr. Evans believed in us, even more than we believed in ourselves, which made it easier to do our job every day. Sometimes he made us get out of our comfort zone and while at the time we were not pleased, in the end it always ended up being the best decision for us! We will be forever grateful for the time we spent with Mr. Evans as well as the life lessons we learned from him. He left an imprint on our hearts!
Miss you guys!

I first met Brother Evans in 2001. I was band director for a school in Detroit and was looking to come back to work in the community I was born, raised, and educated in, Pontiac, Michigan.
I was recommended by a friend and came in for an interview that summer.
My very first impression of Evans was that he seemed rather unconventional for a principal. The interview was as informal as he was dressed. He was clad in shorts, a tee shirt with huge beads and gym shoes.
He was noticeably athletic in build, tall and only glanced at me a few times when asking questions. He was busy doing other paperwork, shuffling manilla folders from place to place while asking me why I wanted to be there, what were my plans and where had I been.
After those brief questions and my even more brief answers, he looked at me square in the eye for the first and only time during our interview.
He said, “We have no instruments. There has never been a band here before. You are on your own. I will be watching to see what you can create. You’re hired.” That was it. He left the room and I was left with the task of creating something, out of nothing.
This is a glimpse into the mind of Todd Evans. For him, it is about vision.
Todd sees a vision, he gathers those who see it too and allows them to do it, sink or swim. He shunned convention and the stale pomp of tradition. He lived by the dictum, there is more than one way to skin a cat, as the term, goes.
He was a 21st century principal in 20th century settings. Those who were caught in the warm and comfortable web of convention and homeostasis, were at odds with Evans from time to time because he disturbed the status quo and saw things as they could be, not as they were, producing the same unsuccessful results.
Todd Evans became a friend over time and an ardent supporter of my efforts as band director for Pontiac Academy for Excellence. We accomplished great things and once he saw that I had vision as well, there was nothing short of stopping heaven and earth that he would not do for me or the band program.
Todd Evans’s greatest asset is vision, tenacity, drive, and an eye for those who have it too. The greatest leaders in the world are not those who know everything; but those who are orchestrators, who can, like a conductor of a symphony, blend all the right people who are good at what they do and facilitate a unified effort to accomplish a common goal.
Todd Evans is a leader, and a visionary.

To Whom it May Concern:
I am writing this letter in reference to Stephen Evans. I had the pleasure of working under his leadership for six and a half years at Suncoast School for Innovative Studies (SSIS) from2010-2016. I worked mostly in the middle school campus teaching technology education and assisted with IT troubleshooting. During my time at SSIS, Mr. Evans was the Executive Director for both the elementary and middle school campuses. I am grateful to Mr. Evans for giving me a chance in education and helping me to develop a love for teaching, that is going on ten years now. He always displayed a genuine care for students and not just in academics but in their lives. His zeal for impacting students’ in a positive way was contagious and shared throughout both campuses. He was always open to listening to my suggestions on ways technology could be upgraded or improved. He had a unique talent to help teachers stay motivated and hungry to teach. His mentoring has played such a big part of my current success in education. I hope to be a part of school administration one day and will build upon the strong foundation of leadership that Mr. Evans has shown me.
Sincerely, Alex Linares, M.Ed. Instructional Technology Facilitator

Subject: Glad to comment viz our association...
I have had the opportunity to meet and interact with Stephen Todd Evans many times over the past few years on a professional and personal level here in Sarasota, Florida.
My perspectives are considerably influenced by being not only a former public-school teacher and varsity sports coach, but my long tenure as an executive with several large, well-known regional banks and Wall-Street-based Investment Banking firms.
I did not develop and maintain my sense of "ethics", and good moral character from my "choice" of profession.... neither did Stephen Todd Evans. It shows that Stephen Evans' sense of "ethics' and high moral character were provided and developed by his family, and shaped by his strong faith, which….yes, I said "faith" which is many times misunderstood and mischaracterized by secular institutions and even by well-meaning community leaders and scholars.
Stephen Evans' faith is an adjunct to his leadership abilities. He is a leader without establishing hegemony. He has an "open mind" but not so "open" that his brains fall out then fail to achieve stated, necessary goals for the greater good. "Group-think" is not part of his character it seems, and that's a good thing.
He is not an "apologist", ergo consistently providing "excuses" for students' (or co-workers) "bad behavior", lack of attention and the lack of self-respect, and respect for others. In present society and academic milieu, Stephen Todd Evans is a rarity, but a needed breath of fresh air. He doesn't embrace problems, he embraces solutions.
Stephen Evans knows that he might receive push-back from the cultural-elite and academic establishment. That reality doesn't impede his pursuit of truth. The "apologists" are the obstacle; Stephen Todd Evans is the arch enemy to them. He is not a "salve" for mediocrity and the status quo. He develops others through realistic vision, personal example and clear accountability....for himself, and others. The problem
with Stephen Todd Evans is that he truly believes that others are as fair, undeterred, and transparent as he is....I know in business and in academics, nothing is further from the truth.

As a Director of Four Winds Network Services I am pleased to recommend a client that became a great friend that I have known for over 10 years. Mr. Stephen Evans and I became acquainted when Stephen was the Executive Director of the Suncoast School for Innovative Studies. (SSIS). At that time SSIS was a single campus. The building looked like an old metal warehouse rather than a school. Stephen had a vision. He recognized the importance of technology (especially wireless devices) for his students as well as his staff. Because of the construction materials in that building I knew we had a challenge on our hands. With Stephen’s leadership and “never say die” approach, we were able to provide a state-of-the-art computer lab for the students, a solid network infrastructure and laptops for all the teachers.
Fast forward several years. Stephen asked me to meet him at a new property that he was going to convert into an elementary school. The building was in deplorable condition. It was going to take an enormous amount of work and dedication to convert this property into a functioning elementary school. Again, Stephen was able to achieve his goal. A new middle school campus was also opened.
Stephen has a passion for helping students and associates succeed. I have witnessed Stephen go the extra mile for students that were struggling in and outside of school. As a leader, Stephen empowers his teachers and staff by including them in decision making and listening to their suggestions.
Stephen is dedicated and loyal. He is passionate and driven to attain excellence and motivate those around him to their highest levels of performance. I am a better person because of his friendship and proud to recommend him for any endeavor.

It’s hard to believe that eight years ago our program, Suncoast School for Innovative Studies, faced a number of major concerns, including financial, that nearly lead to the closure of our school. Stephen Evans, our new Executive Director, working in conjunction with the governing board, in faith we sought out the assistance of Seaside Bank. After detailing our financial needs with Steve Alter, we began our mission and developed our action plan.
Here we are, eight years later, receiving our first ever unanimous Charter School Review by the Sarasota County School Board, extending our charter agreement for an additional 10 years, which is truly remarkable. Financially, we have also alleviated our program of all long-term debts, opened two new campuses, implemented competitive employee salaries and more than doubled our annual revenues. Without question, a blessing and impressive.
On behalf of the Governing Board of Suncoast School for Innovative Studies, our staff, students and parents, we are thankful for the financial assistance provided by Seaside Bank over these last years. Our business relationship has been fruitful for both our organizations. We are blessed and feel favored for the partnership and friendships made.

Good morning Mr. Evans,
It has been awhile, but your positiveness is unforgettable. When I examine my life, I think about the underprivileged kids that might take the same meandering path because of lack of guidance. However, I take comfort in knowing you are there, providing that guidance. As you look across the faces of your students and you see an underprivileged Hispanic boy, think of me and think of what of that kid could become with the right guidance.
I will be graduating May 6th with an M.Ed. from the University of Florida. My current GPA is 3.78. For summer 2017, I have applied for dual enrollment in the Ed.S. and Ed.D. degree programs at the University of West Florida. Acceptance letters will be mailed early March.
Mike Jones of the Sarasota School District is wrong about me and others like me. The underprivileged need a hand up not a push down.

Subject: Johnathan Pringle- The impact you made as a role model
Mr. Evans,
Hi there. I know this is a very random email but I wanted to keep you in the loop with something that I think that you should know. My name is Penny Clayton. My mother had a baby around 44 years old when I was 20 and it was the most amazing thing that happened in our family. She didn’t raise my sister and I so when we were 20 & 21 years old our little brother was born and we loved being big sisters to a little brother that we never imagined we would have. My father raised us but God gave my mother the opportunity 20 years later to be a mother. Well, long story short I’ve always wanted to gain custody of him since he was a baby because I knew I could be a better guardian & big sister and provide him the life that they could not. I was married for 10 years and my “ex” husband never wanted that to happen or be a part of it. So once I divorced him I made this one of my goals in life. Johnathan spent a couple of weeks with me over the summer and said, “Penny, I want to stay with you, can you make that happen?” So I sent an email to my mother and Frank ( his father ) and the next day they said yes! I was ecstatic. So was he. They signed all of the docs for me to have guardianship and it’s happening! He’s in his first year of middle school in Orlando, Florida and just got 4 a’s and 3 b’s. The best grades he’s ever gotten. I was called a week into the school year and they wanted to put him in all in the advanced classes and he chose to make that move excluding math, which I don’t blame him. It’s not our specialty. J He has found a passion in jiu-jitsu & muay thai goes 4-6 times a week. He just earned his second stripe!
So, my whole purpose in this letter is to let you know that I am celebrating Johnathan’s 14th birthday party in Orlando Florida on the 1st of October paintball shooting and I wanted to know if it was possible for you to pop down here and surprise him. This kid is very sensitive yet never cries. However, when he speaks about you, you can see tears in his eyes. I don’t know all of the details but I know that you believed in him and helped my family tremendously and gave him confidence that he didn’t have before. You impacted him positively for life. If you can come, that would be amazing and I can get you more details. He has no idea I’m doing this but I assure you this would be the best surprise he’s ever had before! Please call me when you cal. 407 490 5451. I’ve attached some pics for you to see. He’s doing so good!
Sincerely,

Good morning Dr. Evans,
I hope all is well on your end! I wanted to reach out to you for a couple of reasons. One reason is to inform you that my time with Pontiac Academy for Excellence will come to an end after this Friday, October 31, 2014, as I have accepted an administrative position with East Detroit Public Schools.
However, the primary reason for my contacting you is that I wanted to express my gratitude to you for bringing me on-board at PAE nearly 10 years ago. I remember meeting with you and Rose Pond when I interviewed at PAE, and thinking to myself “this would really be a great place to work,” and you affording me the opportunity to have this thought evolve into a reality is something that I will never forget. In my time at PAE, I have learned so much, and I know that none of it would be possible had it not been for you taking a chance on a kid, fresh out of college, to teach 5th grade in the school. You made a tremendous impression on me as a leader, and made an impact on this school, its students, families, and community, that is still felt and remembered today. I can only hope that in my time at PAE, I’ve been able to bring a fraction of the good that you provided!
Thanks again for allowing me to join a place that I’ve considered a home away from home for the past 10 years, with people who have become what I currently consider to be an extension of my family. It has always been most appreciated.
I wish you a tremendously successful school year at Suncoast School for Innovative Studies, as well as endless success in the future.

Subject: A note of praise for SSIS
Hi, Mr. Evans –
I believe you recently received a copy of one of my email conversations with Mrs. Rollinson, but I wanted to take a moment to tell you personally how impressed and pleased I am with SSIS.
My son, Torin Murphy, is in 6th grade and new to SSIS. Torin has ADD and some other learning disabilities that make social life and academic life very challenging for him (mild dyspraxia, dysgraphia, possible NLD and pragmatic language issues – oral and written, and anxiety). He has been an A/B student most of his young life, but things started going downhill for him as the work became more difficult and his executive functioning deficits became more pronounced. The main reason his grades declined was because he encountered multiple teachers who a) were not educated in how to teach children with focus issues and learning differences, and b) who didn’t have the patience to think “outside the box” with such students and resorted to chastising and shaming him in public. I can’t tell you how disheartening that all was for me to watch, and I saw Torin go from a kid who enjoyed school and took pride in his good grades to a child who couldn’t care less about his academics or his social life. I cried many a night as I watched him spiraling downward, and my attempts to communicate with the teachers and educate them as to his learning issues were all for naught. In addition, the teacher always focused on the negative, and never on the positive, which caused Torin to further withdraw and shut down from learning. He just stopped trying. We tried two different schools in an attempt to get him through elementary school.
That was then. As we prepared to start middle school, I once again took a look around the county at the options and decided to try SSIS, especially since you made the move to the new campus (which is very close to our home). I visited the campus twice and met with Mr. Nelson, Mrs. Harner, and Mrs. Rollinson. Upon speaking with these people, I felt a new sense of hope that maybe this school would be different for Torin, and that SSIS could help him get back on track academically and allow him to start enjoying school again.
My expectations so far have been exceeded beyond anything I could have hoped for. My words won’t do justice to the incredible job your teachers do, but I wanted to at least try and convey this to you. Not only has Torin’s “wall” come down and his resistance to learning vanished, but he is once again demonstrating a positive attitude toward learning and is very much enjoying his hours at SSIS each day. I used to have huge struggles with him each night when it came time to do homework, but that, too, has changed. For one thing, he attends the homework club three days per week (I wish that was also offered on Wednesdays), which is a HUGE help. I work full time, so the club allows him to focus on his homework in the afternoon rather than dragging it out into the evening hours, which has helped our relationship immensely. Torin and I are very close, but the homework battles were taking a toll on our relationship. Even on the nights when he does bring homework home, his attitude is so much more positive than it was the past couple of years. I don’t have to nag him to get his homework out and get started – usually one request is all it takes.
Your teachers understand that homework should be used to reinforce the day’s learning, not to teach new skills, and it should not be overwhelming. In addition, your teachers understand that nothing discourages a child with learning difficulties more than having an insurmountable pile of homework to do each night. Torin’s teachers give him just the right amount, and they also know that, if he can demonstrate his knowledge over a few problems of the same type, there is no need for him to do twenty more of the same thing. They are flexible in their thinking, and they are dealing creatively with his learning issues. This is the first time in many years I have not had to educate the teachers in how to teach a child with learning disabilities. Your teachers already have this knowledge, and they are making huge strides in helping Torin regain his self-confidence. They communicate with me on a regular basis, too, which is another thing with which I struggled in the past. At our prior schools, my emails went unanswered, and my requests for solutions denied.
I think the most impressive characteristic of your teachers, above all, is how positive and encouraging they are. They don’t get upset if Torin has a bad focus day or has a bad weekly test result. They focus on all the positive test results from prior weeks, and they give thought as to how to best get him back on track rather than shattering his self-esteem with negative comments and notes home to mom. He knows that his teachers believe in him and that they are there to support him. I have received wonderful, encouraging notes from just about all of Torin’s teachers, and I know that they really do care. This is huge given our experiences over the last few years. What a difference in attitude and in ability. Your teachers are truly awesome!
I just wanted you to know what a difference SSIS is making for Torin, and what a positive impact this experience is having on our lives. I am so impressed with the teachers there. They are a phenomenal, caring group of professionals, and Torin and I look forward to three great years at your school. You should be very proud of your team – they are amazing!
With gratitude,
Jody Murphy

He bounced out the door, and then ran through the parking lot yelling with excitement, ‘I’m going to Washington’. He bounced at home, he would just stand in place and bounce on his toes, he was about as excited as I have ever seen him. Maybe more. And I believe that part of that was the knowledge that YOU cared enough to make sure it happened for him and I don’t know what to say other than ‘THANK YOU’. Chief Operating Officer
DATE: June 29, 2009
SUBJECT: Grade "A" School
I want to take this opportunity to say congratulations to the Suncoast School for Innovative Studies staff and students for being graded an "A" school by the Florida Department of Education. Because our District has achieved at such high levels, we often take these significant accomplishments for granted. In truth, an "A" grade is only possible through the hard work and dedication of the entire team; teachers, staff, parents and students.
You and your staff have every right to be very proud of your accomplishments. At the end of the day it's all about kids - and something is obviously working at Suncoast School for Innovative Studies.
Please pass my congratulations and thanks to your staff. I'm personally proud to be associated with such outstanding professionals.
